Inrush current in Transformers causes, measurement and analysis.

Abstract:

Inrush current is the saturation current that can occur when the transformers are first switched into action. Since the magnitude of the inrush current depends mainly
upon the magnitude of the remnant flux, and it is very difficult to predict the same and hence the inrush. Currently, equipments like FLUKE® 330 Series and ANALYST® Q70 from DRANETZ BMI are available for measurement of the Inrush. We are working on the development of Inrush measurement. Some of the important aspects of instrumentation are: measurement of the peak value, energy parameter, di/dt, waveshape and differentiation between fault current and the inrush current in the transformer. Since repeated switching of relays for the power transformers may cause damage to the relay contacts and shall be avoided, research is going on “Digital relaying of Transformers”.

The measurement will also help for selection of proper fuse value for transformer manufacturers. Advanced techniques such as Wavelet Transforms are being used for offline analysis of the transients.
The inrush can be limited by different ways such as: soft start techniques, or by use of
thermisters or by special circuits. Here, we have measured the inrush simply on the D.S.O. with the CT and a 10-ohm resistor. The wave shapes are stored on the DSO.
