summary
Production technology today at the start of 21st century and beginning of the third industrial revolution may characterize by microprocessors, artificial intelligence and flexible manufacturing system (FMS). The First FMS installations in United States were made around 1967. After only 18 years, the FMS population had grown to about 300 worldwide.
FMS is an integrated approach to automize a production operation. It consists of a group of CNC’s interconnected by means of an automatic material handling and controlled by an integrated computer control system. This system is designed to be Flexible so that it can manufacture a variety of different types of parts simultaneously under NC program control at the various workstations.
Component of FMS
There are three basic components of FMS,
1) Processing stations: In the present day application, these workstations are typically computer numerical machines (CNC machines).
2) Material handling and storage: The different types of automated material handling equipments are used to transport work parts and subassemblies such as conveyors, automatic guided vehicles (AGVS) etc.
3) Computer Control system: - computer control system is used to co-ordinate the activities of processing stations and material handling systems.
SCOPE OF FMS
Now a day this system is used in variety of manufacturing applications such as:
a) Machining Operations.
b) Assembly of Equipments.
c) Semiconductor Components Manufacturing.
d) Plastic Injection moulding.
e) Sheet Metal Fabrication.
f) Welding.
g) Textile Machinery Manufacture.
FMS BENEFITS
Following are some of the benefits of using FMS
a) Higher machine utilization.
b) Reduced work-in-progress.
c) Lower manufacturing lead times.
d) Greater flexibility in production scheduling.
e) Higher labor productivity.
f) Improved quality.
In India HMT, Motor Industries Bangalore, TELCO, CUMMINS and many more implemented FMS technology. In current economic situation, Indian industries have to Respond changing marketing demands by introducing flexibility In they’re manufacturing.
